The XV International Documentary Festival "Santiago Álvarez in memoriam" concluded on March 11th, with a ceremony rewarding the best works, which were selected among 39 audiovisual presentations from 25 countries.
Cuba Ron Corporation S.A sponsored this festival, one of the most remarkable contests in Cuba as well as the only one in which just compete documentaries. It is also the unique festival which pays tribute to the work of the relevant documentary filmmaker Santiago Álvarez (1919-1998). The event is annually held in Santiago de Cuba city. During this edition, Commander Fidel Castro was also honored.
“La parte por el todo”, by the Argentine directors Roberto Persano, Santiago Nacif and Juan Martínez Cantó, won the Grand Prize "thanks to the mastery in dealing with one of the cruelest aspects of Argentine dictatorship, and also standing out the use of the filmic language as well as the sobriety of resources".
The documentary projects jury rewarded Mayra Álvarez, from Cuba, because of her project “El verso como monte claro: Tomasita Quiala”. There were also rewarded several works in different film specialties.
Lázara Herrera, president of the International Documentary Festival and director of the "Santiago Álvarez" Office from the Cuban institute of cinema art and industry (ICAIC), thanked the event sponsors, especially Cuba Ron Corporation S.A.
